Every VÍÍK performance has a moment when ancient Nordic melodies collide head-on with the energy of a big indie rock rave. Then you realize you've never heard anything like it before.
That's exactly what Elisabeth Vik had in mind.
"I wanted to dismantle my musical heritage and put it back together," said the Norwegian vocalist and composer who founded Víík in Denmark (2019). "I felt a strong need to rebel against the cool, minimalist aesthetic of Nordic folk — and this firework of a band has enabled me to do just that."
VÍÍK is one of Scandinavia's most electrifying live acts: five masterful musicians draw on everything from medieval ballads to indie rock. One moment, they're playful with childlike wonder, and the next, they're stomping with passion and rage. Vik's soprano voice is described by critics as "risk-taking and wild".
Their 2024 debut album SAGT (What's Been Said) climbed into the top 10 of the European World Music Charts. It earned the band 10 Danish Music Award nominations across five years, including Artist of the Year and Live Act of the Year.
Now, following showcase performances at Folk Music Ontario and Mundial Montréal, VÍÍK is bringing that sound to the Fredericton Playhouse.
