For about 100 years music has been integrated is a vital element of film in helping to set mood and character and in many cases has taken in an even larger role in the form of the musical. Sometimes these works are specific to film and others are adapted from theatre pieces to the screen.
In the early days classical composers were key to the development of the musical score for a film. Composers such as Eric Korngold, Max Steiner and others all came from or also wrote concert music along with their impressive work with films. Another route was those of theatre composers such as Rogers and Hammerstein. Composers of the 1950s and 60s sometimes became associated with particular film-makers such as Bernard Hermann with Alred Hitchcock. The last quarter of the twentieth century saw blockbuster composers such as John Williams become household names.
Our concert presents both the music that is familiar to many, and the songs included as well as some of the concert music written by film composers in a rollicking journey through music associated with Stage and Screen.
